Review Summary:

Although a more budgetary option, the power tools manufactured by Porter-Cable have always been quite popular with handymen. For the homeowners, DIY enthusiasts, and light-duty professionals, this brand is one of the best alternatives to names such as Bosch or DeWalt.

That is precisely why we’ve decided to take a closer look at one of the company’s most exciting offerings so far – the PCC761 cut-off tool/grinder. Coming at a genuinely affordable price, this device sports cast-metal gear housing, a high-performance motor that produces 8,500 RPM, a 3-position side handle for better control, and a spindle lock that allows easy wheel swapping. It’s a part of Porter-Cable’s 20V Max system and can be bought on its own or in a combo kit.

In case you’re looking for a truly versatile tool to update your workshop, keep reading – PCC761 could become your top contender.

Porter-Cable PCC761 – The Basics

Red, black, and grey, just like all other Porter-Cable power tools, this cut-off tool/grinder comes with a standard ergonomic design that reduces user fatigue. Along with the rubberized back handle, the model also has a 3-position side handle that provides the user with greater control over the device.

The cast-metal casing of the unit houses a high-performance engine that achieves the maximum speed of 8,500 RPM. This makes PCC761 an excellent choice for smaller cutting projects. Furthermore, the included spindle-lock mechanism turns the wheel-swapping into a very straightforward process.

If these features sound interesting to you, the PCC761 just might be the tool you were looking for. However, we advise you to keep on reading – we’ll take a much closer look at the unit’s characteristics and analyze them in detail.

The Features

Design

As we already said, this cut-off tool/grinder features Porter-Cable’s signature color palette and the overall ergonomic design. It’s pretty apparent that the unit was made to feel great in hands, with both of its handles being the best example. The back handle has a standard over-molded grip that reduces slippage and fatigue, while the frontal one has a rubberized texture and can be locked into three different positions (right, left, and vertical). All of this reduces vibrations to a minimum and provides the user with good control over the tool.

The spindle-lock mechanism featured on PCC761 allows quick and easy wheel changes. Although homeowners might consider this unimportant, the contractors will undoubtedly appreciate the presence of this feature – for them; time is money.

Another great thing about the model’s design is that it has cast metal gear housing. Not only does this casing protect the unit’s vital parts, but it also helps dissipate the heat which builds up during extended use.

Power

The engine that’s at the heart of PCC761 has a solid performance – the speed of 8,500 RPM is more than enough for most light-duty cutting and grinding tasks. Powered by a 20V Li-Ion battery, the model can be utilized for impressively long cutting/grinding sessions. However, it is important to mention that the bare-tool version comes without a battery – you’ll have to purchase it separately.

One thing that deserves special praise is that this model isn’t as noisy as the devices of this type usually are. This is especially noticeable when we compare it with the corded cut-off tools – the noise level produced by PCC761 isn’t as nearly as high.

Accessories & Warranty

Although it comes without a battery, this power tool is accompanied by two different guards (for cutting and grinding), two cutting disks, one grinding disks, the already-mentioned side handle, and the user manual. The included warranty is a 3-year limited one, which is a standard for most power tools on today’s market.

Things We Liked / Didn’t Like

R

Things we liked about it

Although genuinely affordable, the Porter-Cable PCC761 has a build quality and performance that are both very impressive. Due to the presence of two contoured, anti-slip handles, using this cut-off/grinder is as enjoyable as it gets. The same could be said for the wheel swapping – the engineers of Porter-Cable have turned it into a fast and straightforward process.

The metal housing of this device protects (and dissipates excessive heat, too) the unit’s high-performing engine. Capable of achieving 8,500 RPM, it will allow you to use the model for all kinds of light-duty cutting and grinding tasks. It’s not the most powerful or fastest device of this type out there, but it does its job well and without hiccups.

Another thing we liked is the relative quietness of PCC761, although we still advise wearing hearing protection. Furthermore, it’s a nice thing that the package includes a couple of crucial accessories, such as the cutting and grinding disks.

Q

Things we didn’t like

Tackling smaller projects with PCC671 is absolutely okay, but using it as a go-to tool for the really demanding applications is not something you want to do. The bare-tool version comes without a battery, which means that you’ll have to purchase it separately (or get this tool in one of PC’s toolsets).

General Impressions

Highly satisfied with the model’s design and power, most of the users tend to recommend PCC761 to their relatives and friends. They’re saying that the unit has a top value and that it’s of great help when it comes to smaller projects around the house or at work. They commend the model’s non-slip handles, spindle-lock mechanism, as well as the impressive battery life.

Conclusion

The design and the power of this tool had us honestly surprised. When it comes to cheaper cordless grinders/cutting tools, the PCC761 is undoubtedly among the best ones out there. It possesses the right qualities to be an excellent choice for hobbyists and DIY-ers, as well as for all those who need a reliable cutting & grinding power tool for their smaller projects.
