Types of the band saw blades depend on the basic tooth styles. Three most common styles are hook, skip and regular. There are also variable pitch blades and the wavy tooth. Even though all of these saw blades are similar at the first sight, there are slight differences and each type is suitable for a particular kind of work. You can’t use a hook blade to do a job that requires a skip blade, simple as that. So, knowing the features of these blades will save your money, time and effort in the long run.

Hook Type

The tooth blades are specific because of a larger tooth and a deeper gullet. That is especially useful if you really need to feed the blade into the material with extreme aggression. It will allow you to cut at much faster rates. This kind of blades is usually used for metal, plastic, hardwood and thicker wood when you need long cuts.

Skip Type

The thing with the skip type is that there is more space between the teeth. More space will prevent the blade from clogging which is very important when it comes to cutting plastics, non-ferrous metals or types of soft wood. Each blade suits a different type of utilization and knowing their features will ensure maximum efficiency.

Regular Type

With regular tooth blades, it is all about proportion and this type of blades is the most common. This type is the most suited one for a general purpose of both contour and cut-off cutting. This type of blade performs the best when cutting fine and thin materials. When it comes to a different band saw blade types, this one has the widest application all over the world.

Variable Pitch Blades

This is a very interesting type of a saw blade because it involves a variety of teeth in different size and setting. The blade type is perfect for smooth but fast finish cuts and ideal for cutting curves or joinery.

The Wavy Tooth Blade

The Wavy tooth set is different from the others because of its group of teeth set right and left. These groups are separated by raker teeth, which means that one tooth is going to the right and one to the left. These blades are mostly recommended for cutting thin sheets, tubes and any other thinner metal sections.

The Size Does Matter

Depending on what you want to do, you have to pick the right size for the job otherwise you will end up with a bad performance. The correct size will determine the level of success and there is a way how you can accurately determine the right blade size that will fit the bill. In case that you do not have a manual or your machine has no markings, find the alternative way how you can determine the right length. Make sure that you maintain proper lubrication and never use water for it. There is a list of good products for this on the Internet.
